ABOUT: With her mesmerising vocals and sassy dance moves, Beyoncé has won millions of devoted fans. And now the songstress, 37, has been named the most powerful woman in music – sailing ahead of heavyweights Taylor Swift, Adele and Dua Lipa. The ranking, compiled by BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour and unveiled as part of BBC Music Day, includes the 40 most influential females in the industry. Thanks to her feminism, activism and powerful lyrics, Beyoncé saw off her rivals to make it to the top spot. The Run the World (Girls) hitmaker and mother of three is known for taking a strong stance on contemporary issues. In 2014, she performed in California at the MTV Video Music Awards in front of a screen emblazoned with the word ‘feminist’ displayed in white capital letters.Three years later, she used her Grammy acceptance speech to address the topic of race and beauty.Accepting the award for Best Urban Contemporary Album for Lemonade, she said her intention was ‘to create a body of work that would give a voice to our pain, our struggles, our darkness, and our history, to confront issues that make us uncomfortable’.She added: ‘It’s important to me to show images to my children that reflect their beauty so they can grow up in a world where they look in the mirror. And have no doubt that they’re beautiful, intelligent, and capable’.Beyoncé’s acts of altruism have also won her praise. She and her superstar rapper husband Jay Z recently awarded a $100,000 scholarship to 17-year-old Mikayla Lowry from Arizona, USA.Ms Lowry was given the money by the Shawn Carter Foundation and the BeyGOOD Initiative, which hopes to award more than $1million in scholarships in 11 cities. The top 40 list not only recognised global music stars, but also unsung heroes working to empower women. In third place, hot on the heels of Taylor Swift, was chief executive of the PRS Foundation Vanessa Reed. For the last 10 years she has repositioned the foundation – which is the UK’s leading funder of new music and talent – as a body campaigning for women in the industry. Also among the top 10 on the list was Marin Alsop, who became the first female conductor to lead the Last Night of the Proms.
